‘COME’: Finding Peace in an Anxious World and Jesus’ Invitation to the Weary

In a world filled with pressure, uncertainty and growing mental strain, the words of Jesus offer a compassionate invitation: come to me and find rest for your soul.

Anyone who is a parent or grandparent watches the daily news with a particularly heavy heart. The prevailing threats and uncertainties are difficult for anyone to bear but especially tough when you think of the children in your life. With the impact of social media, AI and peer pressure, the age of innocence ends earlier as children emerge all too quickly from what should be a leisurely childhood. No wonder that so many adults, children and young people are suffering with symptoms of poor mental health.

  • ‘Since beginning my work in areas like addiction, for example, I have seen time and time again that the roots of poor mental health in adulthood are almost always present in unresolved childhood challenges’ – Kate Middleton
  • ‘Mental health doesn’t care what your name is or what you do for a living’ – Mardy Fish

The fact is that every demographic in society whether defined by age, gender, race or income is under immense strain. The young with few possessions often feel alienated from those older who seem to have few financial worries. Those with jobs have to work harder and longer resulting in stressed lives. The retired worry about their health, whether their resources will last out, wrestling with fear, guilt and grief.

What to do?

Hear the words of Jesus: ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest’ – Matthew 11:28

Here is the invitation to lay down your burdens and to find all you need for the way forward. This is not a word of condemnation or judgement but it is a word of gentle compassion and hope. Here’s how Jesus continues to address your most pressing needs:

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls

This is a yoke made to sit easy on your shoulders, one where Jesus takes the strain rather than you.

Jesus knows

Your needs and stresses are no surprise to Jesus – interest rates, accommodation, job insecurities, relationship breakdowns.

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world’ – John 16:33

His invitation is to those who feel weak, vulnerable and needy. Those who seem self-sufficient and strong are likely to overlook this invitation. They forget that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who can take care of them (John 10:11-14) and invites us to come to Him as ‘little children’.

But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these’” – Luke 18:16

Next time

When you hear crisis, plummeting stock markets, rising energy prices, bombings … remember the invitation of Jesus to come and find rest for your soul. Make ‘next time’ into ‘this time’ for it is that decision that will give you peace that the world cannot give. Isaiah speaks of the time when Jesus will come and describes Him as ‘The Prince of Peace’ (Isaiah 9:6).

Peace for you

Here is the gift of Jesus for you to ask for and to receive:

‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid’ – John 14:27

Jesus came for the broken, the needy and the ‘sinners’ – for all those who know they have needs (Mark 2:17)

Warning

If you try to go it alone, you are heading for disappointment and failure in this life. Those who ask for God’s help now receive it and are given a warm welcome by Jesus in the time to come (Matthew 25:21) but those who reject Him now get this stern warning of what awaits: ‘Depart from me’ (Matthew 25:41)

Question

If someone were to invite you to a special banquet with a beautiful hand-written card, would you say yes or no? That’s what you have just read, an invitation to come, personally made to you. Have a read of two other people here who read the invite and see what difference it made to their lives:
