It is all too easy to get tied up in knots as you puzzle over this. We will often have questions like, ‘How can I justify being loved by God?’ and ‘There must be some way to earn this’. It can be a tough one to accept, but grace is given freely to the person with a humble heart. Whilst there is no small print to catch you out, it is good to think this through and then ask yourself two questions:
Do I truly believe this? If so, what does it mean for my life?
1. God’s Love Is Conditional — but not in the way people fear.
Scripture is clear:
God’s saving love is received through a condition — His grace offered, and our believing response.
John 3:16 — ‘Whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life’
Ephesians 2:8–9 — ‘By grace you have been saved through faith…’
Romans 10:9 — ‘If you confess… and believe… you will be saved’
The condition is not performance, morality, or religious achievement.
The condition is trusting in who Jesus is (the Son of God) and what He has done (the cross) — personally, not theoretically.
‘Grace is not opposed to effort; it is opposed to earning’ — Dallas Willard
God’s saving love is offered freely, but it must be received.
2. God’s Love Is Unconditional — once you belong to Him.
Once you are His child, His love is not based on your behaviour, success, consistency, or spiritual performance.
Romans 5:8 — ‘While we were still sinners, Christ died for us’
Romans 8:38–39 — Nothing ‘in all creation’ can separate us from His love.
1 John 3:1 — ‘See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God’
Your failures don’t cancel His affection.
Your weaknesses don’t diminish His commitment.
Your struggles don’t surprise Him.
‘God loves each of us as if there were only one of us’ — Augustine
His love is not fragile. It is covenantal, fierce, and anchored in Christ.
3. But God’s Love Transforms — not indulges — His children.
A child of God receives a new mindset, a new heart, and a new direction.
Romans 6:11 — ‘Count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God…’
1 Corinthians 2:16 — ‘We have the mind of Christ’
Romans 12:2 — ‘Be transformed by the renewing of your mind’
We don’t obey to earn love.
We obey because we’ve received love.
Grace doesn’t lower the bar — it changes the heart.
4. A Picture That Helps – The Gift That Changes Everything:
Imagine someone receives a life‑saving organ transplant.
Or a soldier gives his life on the battlefield so that another can live.
The recipient doesn’t “pay back” the donor — that’s impossible.
But they often say things like:
“I want to live in a way that honours the gift.”
“I feel a responsibility to steward this new life well.”
So is with the Christian life.
Jesus didn’t just improve your life — He gave His life so you could live.
And now, out of gratitude, love, and awe, you want to honour the One who saved you.
Not to earn His love.
But because you already have it.
5. So… Is God’s Love Conditional or Unconditional?
God’s saving love is conditional
— on His grace and your believing response to Jesus.
God’s fatherly love is unconditional
— once you belong to Him, nothing can separate you from His heart.
God’s transforming love is purposeful
— shaping you into someone who reflects His glory.
This is not contradiction.
It is the beautiful, balanced truth of the gospel.
Summing Up
Ideally, a ‘human’ father’s love for his child is unconditional and yet it is still down to the child whether he or she wants to grow that relationship by accepting such love. The love God has for us is perfect – it is the unconditional love of our Heavenly Father but it remains up to us as to whether we accept it and grow a relationship with Him.
Back to those first two questions. If your answer is ‘yes’, then it should safeguard you from becoming a captive again to ‘religious effort’ and prompt you to live a life of thankful worship free from anxiety. It is about Being rather than Doing. If your answer is ‘no’ or ‘I’m unsure’, have a read of what Paul writes to the Romans below:
‘So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you’ – Romans 12: 1-2 The Message
