If there was a medical condition that was similar to cynicism, then it would be ‘arteriosclerosis’. This is when the arteries become narrowed and hardened due to the gradual buildup of plaque. Unless this is diagnosed and treated, then it is likely to lead to a heart attack and an early death.

In spiritual terms, the heart is seen as the core where we nurture or neglect our walk with God. The writer of Proverbs puts it this way: ‘Above all else, guard your heart carefully because your life flows from it (Proverbs 4:23). When we become introspective, focussing on disappointments and doubts, it’s as if plaque is building up and we see things through a cloudy negative lens.

When there is an early diagnosis of hardening arteries, things can improve. Lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet and exercising are recommended. The longer before this condition is diagnosed, the more radical the treatment which may include medication and surgery. Likewise spiritually – without taking action, faith can become volatile and even die.
