When you go shopping, it’s good to have an open mind whilst you look around and weigh up the alternatives. You look for the right features, the best quality, see what others have said and the star ratings have been given. An agnostic shopping could spend all day looking but go home empty-handed never having been able to make a decision!
Orson Welles made a stinging statement when he said this: ‘I have a great love and respect for religion, great love and respect for atheism. What I hate is agnosticism, people who do not choose.’ Whilst that is harsh, it truly is more fulfilling to use our minds to carefully sift the evidence and then make a choice. The shopping basket need not be empty and you will be able to test the ‘product’ you buy through using it.
Gilbert K Chesterton asserted this: ‘The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried.’ True Christianity is about following Jesus. Phoney alternatives that leave you doubting and disappointed may be about mere church attendance, trying to keep some rules, keeping others happy and shallow ‘fair-weather’ thinking. Look closely again at Jesus, his life and his teaching – hard yes, but it holds up to the deepest scrutiny and will never disappoint.
