Have you ever spent time investigating your family tree? There has been an explosion of interest in people wanting to reconnect with their roots or with family and friends. If you’ve never looked, try typing your name in things like Genes Reunited, Friends Reunited and Ancestry.co.uk – you’ll be amazed! Why is it so popular? Apart from the curiosity factor, many are using these internet tools to reconnect with long lost family or friends.
Corcoran and long-lost brother Muir were parted for an incredible 80 years! They now want to spend every day together. ‘Eighty years is a long time being separated,’ said Muir. ‘It’s sad to think of all those lost years. I don’t know how to make up for it.’ Estranged Betty Billadeau and Clifford Boyson were finally reunited since being placed in foster care in 65 years before. With the help of 7-year old neighbour Eddie Hanzelin, Clifford found his sister Betty: ‘Finding Clifford has repaired a hole in my heart.’
Diane Winters and her daughter Lisa were separated when she was born in a home for unwed mums. During the disconnection, Diane got caught up in a lifestyle that tried to numb the pain: ‘I had lived a hard life, partly with quiet excuses that I was filling an empty hole in my heart, the one left after losing a child. I had tried to fill that hole with drugs and alcohol and all kinds of things I was not proud of.’ It ended happily says Diane: ‘The memory of the day my 28 year old daughter found me is etched upon my heart like a rainbow connected to my soul.’
In all these real life stories, there was pain on both sides during the time of separation. When Jesus told the story of the Prodigal, this truth about pain for both parties comes out. Even more than this, we can see the unreserved love and outflow of grace from the Father who has been
longing for this time of reconnection with his child.
He still longs for this with every child of His who has become disconnected from Him or from His family. Psalm 85 is filled with the beauty of God’s unfailing love and joyful willingness to revive and restore those who call out to Him. Jesus said this in John 15v9: ‘As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.’
